RE: Suburban Anode rod question.

I also use teflon tape, and as Handbasket says, you need not worry about the electrical contact. With hard water that is so common, the anode rod can be a real pain to remove when not using tape.
Thank you. I did use the tape as the first time I removed the rod it was frozen...VERY hard to remove!

Thank you all! I will remove my new Anode and add a few turns of tape. I will also check with a meter!

Suburban Anode rod question.

I have taken the Anode rod out a few times to drain the water from my SW6DE Tank. I bought a replacement and needed to use it yesterday. I looked and it is the same size as my old one.
Now my questions. The threads on the Tank and the new Anode are very clean. When I put the Anode in, all seems fine but when it is tight there is a thread still showing. This is obvious as it is shiny. Is this OK, and something I just never noticed before? It is not striped and all seems OK. Perhaps, since the old one was discolored, it too always stopped with a thread or two showing, but was not noticed.
Also, I have seen that it is advised to NOT use Teflon tape on the threads. They say that even though it is great for making it easy to remove the Anode, it can insulate the rods contact with the threads making the Anodes function useless. Any thoughts?
TIA

RE: 288 nights in our LTV

I'll have to check mine when we get back from Labrador. I know we did 171 nights to Alaska & back, ~90 around the Great Lakes, 45 to the Rose Parade, we have been out ~45 this trip, plus a few short ones ~30 nights or less. 37k miles in the GS and now 26k+ in the LTV. Sitting in Sydney Nova Scotia now waiting on the ferry NORTH...
Thanks...I guess 250 miles is OK. I know I like to get into CG's before dark, and don't need no stinkin alarm in the morning when I am on Vacation! :D

RE: 288 nights in our LTV

For all of the extended trips, just how many miles, or hours of driving, do you do per day? We have only used ours in Oregon and Washington so far. After about 4 hours on the road it seems like it is time for a break and/or time to pull into a CG.

RE: Space saving storage idea

Well, not to add fuel to the fire...but!
It is my wife who sets up all of these "organized systems" and then is mad when I can not find the item I am looking for because she is the one who put it away in a place that made sense to her! :-)
Geeze, why does it not work the same way when she asks me for computer support for the same issues?
OK, back to storage. We do use those larger bags to suck out the air and we can store sheets and towels in a much smaller space.

RE: Dump Station At Home Anyone?

I think that maybe we have got most people beat on the home dump/hookup situation! The gentleman that built our river place was interested in one thing, a place on the river to RV. We have TWO full 50A, phone, sewer, cable hookups!
Be careful now...you'll have a bunch of us coming to visit your "RV park"
YES, and I am even in the same state!!

Thanks all. I will check my dipstick, but believe it is Red. I thought my Mobil 1 did say fully Synth, but did return them.

RE: I NEED COFFEE!

We have a full size Black & Decker built-in 110V coffee maker. The only way it works is with an electrical hookup or running the generator but it makes coffee just like we make it at home. If we can't make the coffee I guess we hit the road and stop at the first McDonalds. ;)
At home, we have an instant hot water tap. I put the water from it in the microwave and see how long it takes it to boil. Now, when I make coffee, I put the water in the Microwave and let it go for that amount of time minus 10 seconds. Works great and I have NEVER made bitter coffee in the French Press!
Now looking at roasting my own beans. Big advantages to that!

RE: Best Oil for 2005 Sprinter?

the reason I suggest Mobil 1 is that it and Amsoil are the only two real synthetic oils, all the rest are super refined oil that the government has allowed them to use the word synthetic for. When I bought my RT 170, Chevy dealer told me to use only Mobil 1 & AC filters. I also converted my 96 Chevy Corsica and 1965 Chevy Van to Mobil 1, they both are running much better and are getting better gas mileage. (27 mpg out of a 12 year old car with 123000 on it, up from 25) It must be magic
That is not quite true anymore. Mobil lost a lawsuit against Castrol a couple of years ago, concerning advertising of "synthetic" on oils that were not 100% synthetic. Since then, you may have noticed that Mobil 1 has motor oils that list mileage, 5000, 7500 and 15,0000 miles. (these are not Delvac, just Mobil 1) Only the 15,000 mile Mobil 1 is a full synthetic. There are other full synthetics, but you have to look at MSDS sheets to see if list mineral oils in their chemical make up.
I suggest you read some information on oil filters: Oil filter review, this is not sponsored by any of the manufacturers, it supports information that I have gotten from the oil engineers that I deal with.
FYI, I have been a dealer in industrial lubrication for 15 years and being the car nut that I am, I learn about vehicle lubes.
Not sure where it says 15,000 miles but the Mobil 1 0W-40 I bought (and will return) does say "Fully Synthetic" on it.
After all this, I guess I do not need it anyway!

RE: Best Oil for 2005 Sprinter?

Yes, MPSAN, Mobil 1 0W-40 is ok for a Sprinter. It's on the list Same as several other approved oils.
You can check you oil using the Assyst. Turn the ignition key to position 2 and don't engage the starter. Press the little clock button and hold it. After some number flashing a little oil can shows up. If you were low or high on oil, it would say so under the oil can.
I will have to try that. I see in my book that it says to check within 5 minutes of turning off, and having the engine up to temp. Then it says to use the Mi button.

I guess the question is if Mobil 1 is OK for the MBZ Diesel.
I may just return my Mobil 1 0W-40 as I checked my oil level about 15 minutes after turning the engine off (as it says to do in the manual) and it is full. When I checked it before it was low, but had not been running for several days. I guess I don't need to add any after all.
Still I would like to get this resolved before I have a dealer change my oil and add the wrong thing.

RE: Best Oil for 2005 Sprinter?

I looked in my Sprinter Manual and it does say on page 14.2 to use mb 228.3, 228.5, 229.3, AND 229.5.
Then on page 14.3 it shows the approved Products. Mobil 1 0W40 (229.5) and Mobil Delvac 1 5W-40 (228.5) are both on there. So does this mean that for my Sprinter either will be OK?

RE: Best Oil for 2005 Sprinter?

That is a complete MB approved oil list and it is a little tricky to read. The oils listed under MB 228.5, apply to your van.
Thank you topless. I would not have known it was 228.5. Not sure where that is shown. I can look in my Sprinter book and see if it says anything to that effect in the OIL section.
Thank you again.

RE: Best Oil for 2005 Sprinter?

Here is a link to the MB approved oil list. Mercedes Benz approved oil list
Thank you! But, am I reading this wrong or does it say it is OK to use the Mobil 1 0W40 in an '05 Sprinter? How do I know if I have a fleece filter? Or are they saying that any '05 will have the Fleece filter and Vehicles with the Mercedes Maintenance System starting with MY2005 can use 229.5 or 229.51 oils. In that case the Mobil 1 0W40 for European cars IS OK. :-) I assume all '05's have the Mercedes Maintenance System starting with MY2005 can use 229.5 or 229.51 oils

RE: Best Oil for 2005 Sprinter?

There is an approved oil list for Sprinters and I'll have to find it to post up for you. You do not want to use Mobil 1 unless it says Mobil 1 Delvac on the bottle. Delvac is the diesel oil line, regular Mobil 1 is not diesel rated and is not an approved oil my MB. Walmart carries it, at least around here it does. Any truck stop should have it too. I don't believe it comes in 0w-40, the Mobil 1 Delvac is 5w-40.
Whatever oil you choose to run, it must be diesel rated or you will have problems. Diesel oil has much higher load capabilities and more detergent additives than motor oils used in gasoline engines.
Well, davydd mentioned the same thing I was told...to use Mobile 1 0W40. This is what the Dodge/Sprinter dealer's service dept. told me. I stopped at Schucks and got it for $5.84 a Qt. It does not say Delvac, but DOES say that it is approved by MBZ for turbocharged and Diesel Engines. As I said, that is what my dealer just told me as well.
However...as a note:
Since I am not far from Freightliner here in Portland, I called and they said to use Delvac as well. Perhaps that is what they have for all of the big rigs. I called my dealer back and he said he was surprised at that as Dodge has ALWAYS told them to use Mobile 1 0W40. Delvac is 5W40. He said the '08 uses something else, but still not Delvac. This is a 5 star service department and I have trusted them. I also called them after Mobil (1-800-ask-mobil) said that 0W40 was WRONG and that Delvac 5W40 should be used. They said there is a Mobil 1 TurboDiesel 5W40 that is the same and is available at places like Wal-Mart. My dealer is now going to check further!

RE: Engine Control Unit Lamp...why is it on?

Without reading the codes a Check engine light and battery troubles I will guess a glow plug or glow plug controller code. When battery voltage drops and you try to crank the engine it can set some funky codes , often glow plug related codes. Take it in and if you get a chance pass along what is found.
OK...the codes said that there was an unresolved battery issue. They asked if I had jumpstarted it and I said yes...and got a new battey, too. They reset the codes...and said I would not have been able to...and sent me on my way.
